CHAGS XII is the conference of the International Society for Hunter Gatherer Research (ISHGR) and is hosted by the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. Organisational decisions ultimately rest with the convenor but organisation is made possible through a network. The convenor works closely with the ISHGR Board and is the “interface” between the ISHGR and the University. The international committee (IOC) is drawn from the ISHGR membership and its role is consultative and advisory, and it also assists with international and professional networking, while the local committee (LOC) is drawn from staff of the School of Social Sciences, advises on local complexities, and manages the practical tasks of shaping the conference. (There is, of course, some overlap in roles.) Together, both committees provide practical and moral guidance and support to the convenor, and help to translate the ideals of hunter-gatherer studies into the working procedures of CHAGS.
