Special Workshop on Problems of Peninsular Malaysia’s Indigenous Minorities

There will be a one-day workshop entitled ‘Peninsular Malaysia’s “Original People” (Orang Asli) Now: Problems and Prospects’ on Saturday, 28 July, the day after CHAGS ends. It will be held in the UAB Building in downtown George Town. The main purpose is to enable Orang Asli activists, academics, and leaders of indigenous organizations and groups to describe and discuss the problems facing their people today and possible solutions to those problems. Possible topics for consideration include legal problems, land rights problems, environmental problems, economic problems, social and political problems, health problems, and educational problems.

The workshop will consist of morning and afternoon sessions, the first aimed mainly at specialists and the second at specialists and the general public. The morning session (9:00 am to noon) will feature brief presentations by ten speakers on topics of their choice, alternating with four periods of panel discussion and questions from the audience. The afternoon session (1:30-3:00 pm) will begin with a film by Orang Asli film-makers, followed by a panel discussion and questions from the audience. Most presentations will be in the Malay language (Bahasa Malaysia), but near-simultaneous English translation will be provided.

All CHAGS attendees are cordially invited to attend either or both sessions. There will be no admission charge.

Further details will be provided as soon as the list of speakers and their topics is finalized.

Education Research and Advocacy Group formed

We would like to call your attention to the establishment of a new Research and Advocacy Group under ISHGR: the Research and Advocacy Group: Hunter Gatherer Education. Please find a description of the group and a working statement on the web page: http://site.uit.no/hg-education/. We will hold two events associated with this new group at CHAGS 12:

- A workshop immediately before the upcoming CHAGS conference, 21-22 July, in Penang, to establish the group. This event is open to all conference participants, but we do ask that you register so that we can keep track of the numbers. Registration is not binding, and there is no charge for participation in the workshop itself. However you will have to cover your accommodation for those nights and some meals from your own travel budget. Please see the registration page for more details.

- A launch of the new group, at lunchtime on Wednesday, 25 July (open event for conference participants). More details will appear on the finalized conference schedule.

If you have any questions, please fill out the ‘contact us’ form on the website, or send an email to huntergatherereducation@gmail.com.
